Fresh Holiday 'Dos For Natural Hair

Double Back Braids With Upfront Lift
Any style that looks this complex, yet is so simple, has our hearts. When you see how easy it is, we think you’ll love it, too.

Using your fingers or a comb, separate a top section by creating a part over the arch of each eyebrow. Then, create a part across the crown of the head. Use bobby pins to keep this top section out of your way. Now, working along that part at the crown, create two equal side sections by running your fingers down from the crown, ending behind each ear. Pull these two side sections out of your way with clips. We’ll be back for them later. But, now, we’re going to work on that section at the back of your head.

Separate the back section of hair down the center with your fingers, then tilt your head forward and begin cornrowing one section upward. You'll move from the nape of your neck all the way to the part you’ve created along the front three sections.

Secure the end with a bobby pin to close off the braid.

Repeat the upward cornrow on the remaining section in the back. Be sure to keep the braids close to each other. The next step depends on it.

Pin the braids together with bobby pins along the seam. The idea is to create a cohesive style without a visible part. The back of your head should now have two upward cornrows, secured at the ends and down the center by bobby pins. "Creating an X shape with the bobby pins helps give them extra hold,” says Miko. “You want to reinforce the style so it stays in place for a long time.”

Smooth pomade along the hairline to keep baby hairs in place. Miko used Miss Jessie’s Baby ButterCreme for softness and a gentle hold.

Take the loose side sections. Brush them smooth from the hairline to the ends.

Now, simply smooth those side sections back...

.... and crisscross them over the braids in the back. Secure the hair to the braids with bobby pins for a retro-cool look.

Take the excess hair directly over the crown of your hair and simply tuck it over the top. This will cover the top seams of the braids. Pin the section in place to finish the back.

Finger-fluff your crown and bangs for a style with serious attitude. You’re done!
